A quantitative multi-phase field model of polycrystalline alloy solidification

چکیده
A multi-phase field model for quantitative simulations of polycrystalline solidification of binary alloys is introduced. During the freegrowth stage of solidification, the model exploits the thin-interface analysis developed by Karma [3] in order to realistically capture bulk phase diffusion and the sharp interface corrections predicted by traditional models of solidification. During grain boundary coalescence, the model is constructed to reproduce the properties of repulsive grain boundaries described by Rappaz et al. [29]. The model provides a very simple mechanism for decoupling of solute and concentration fields at steady state, an important feature for calculating grain boundary energies. 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. An adaptive, fully implicit multigrid phase-field model for the quantitative simulation of non-isothermal binary alloy solidification
Using state-of-the-art numerical techniques, such as mesh adaptivity, implicit time-stepping and a non-linear multi-grid solver, the phase-field equations for the non-isothermal solidification of a dilute binary alloy have been solved. Using the quantitative, thin-interface formulation of the problem we have found that at high Lewis number a minimum in the dendrite tip radius is predicted with ...
متن کاملRemarks on some open problems in phase-field modelling of solidification
Three different topics in phase-field modelling of solidification are discussed, with particular emphasis on the limitations of the currently available modelling approaches. First, thin-interface limits of two-sided phasefield models are examined, and it is shown that the antitrapping current is in general not sufficient to remove all thin-interface effects. Second, orientation-field models for...
متن کاملModeling of coupled motion and growth interaction of equiaxed dendritic crystals in a binary alloy during solidification
Motion of growing dendrites is a common phenomenon during solidification but often neglected in numerical simulations because of the complicate underlying multiphysics. Here a phase-field model incorporating dendrite-melt two-phase flow is proposed for simulating the dynamically interacted process. The proposed model circumvents complexity to resolve dendritic growth, natural convection and sol...
متن کاملQuantitative phase-field modeling of nonisothermal solidification in dilute multicomponent alloys with arbitrary diffusivities.
A quantitative phase-field model is developed for simulating microstructural pattern formation in nonisothermal solidification in dilute multicomponent alloys with arbitrary thermal and solutal diffusivities. By performing the matched asymptotic analysis, it is shown that the present model with antitrapping current terms reproduces the free-boundary problem of interest in the thin-interface lim...
متن کاملModeling of Microstructure Evolution in the Solidification of Multi-component Alloys Using Level Set Methods
A level set method combining features of front tracking methods and fixed domain methods is presented to model microstructure evolution in the solidification of multi-component multiphase alloy systems. Phase boundaries are explicitly tracked by solving the multi-phase level set equations. Diffused interfaces are constructed by extending a small width in both directions from these explicitly tr...
